TODAYS ISSUES:
Gender Equality
"Gender equality, also known as sex equality, gender egalitarianism, sexual equality or equality of the genders, is the view that men and women should receive equal treatment, and should not be discriminated against based on gender, unless there is a sound biological reason for different treatment."
In today's society, women are still fighting for equality. They've come a long way, but still aren't paid as much as men for the exact same jobs. "Today in the 112th Congress women hold 17 Senate seats out of 100 and hold 92 out of 435 House seats." Women have less of a place in the work force and there has yet to be a woman president. They are often times demoted or not promoted because they have taken time off for maternity leave. In some counties, not only women get maternity leave, but men as well. But the problem also has to do with how society treats and portrays women: as incompetent, sexual objects. "You fight/run/throw/anything like a GIRL."<-insult. Dumb blondes are always women. Females are taught to watch out in a parking garage. Schools tell girls not to wear certain things instead of teaching boys how to control themselves or be a gentleman. Feminists art often times portrayed as obsessive, ungrateful, power-crazy women.
Although women have more rights in the US than many countries (Especially Pakistan, Iran, India, etc. where women aren't allowed to go out without a man and men often times aren't punished for beating women), they still aren't equal to men. Like African Americans, women are not totally equal to white men.

I think this video really describes how women should be portrayed as strong and equal, not a victim or incompetent.
