Brown Vs. Board of Education
Briggs Vs. Elliot
In Summerton, NC, some African American student had to walk up to 9 miles to get to school because they had not a single bus. White children had 33 buses. African American families then asked school officials for one bus, they did pay taxes after all. But the school officials refused, claiming that whites payed more taxes and wouldn't pay for their bus. Parents went on to buy a second hand bus that repeatedly broke down, until it was dead for good.
In 1948, an attorney and Thurgood Marshal sued the county board without success. Then a year later, the NAACP agreed to help the local families and turned the case from equal transportation to equal education opportunities. A reverend and a local mom lead a petition to no avail. The case progressed into 1950; the resolution was that the schools must be equalized but not integrated.
Shortly after, it was brought with four other cases to the supreme court were desegregation was ruled illegal.
